Circus

Director: Grigori Aleksandrov
(also directed Volga, Volga)
Release Date: 1936

Circus begins with an American crowd rushing against Marion and her son, screaming "Beat her up!" She manages to jump on a train and merely escape death.

Marion is an American circus artist who gave birth to a black baby and became a victim of racism in the US. She is recruited to join a German, Kneishitz, with his circus on their trip to the USSR.

At first, Marion wants to leave the circus, but she is blackmailed by Kneishitz. She meets (the incredibly handsome) Martynov and falls in love. Their performance impresses (the racially and ethnically diverse) audience dramatically. Marion finds refuge not only with her new husband, but also in the USSR. Her black son is treated with love by the Soviet people.
